![]() Or have you imported your photos from an iPhone or iPad by mixing different methods of import? For example, mixing manual import with my Photo Stream or iCloud Photos or an automatic format conversion to JPEG? This can create duplicates in a different file format or downsized, smaller duplicates and you will have to check the size and file format of the keepers. Has your camera been set to take several photos in succession, for example exposure stacks or bursts? The bursts have o be weeded out manually, a s it will depend on your taste. To help you decide which photos to keep it might help to find out why you are having duplicates. If you trust the recommendations of a duplicate detector without looking at the photos, you may be throwing away your best photos. If there are people in them, take the one where the people are are looking best. This is a question of the resolution of the photo and the photographic quality.įor apparently identical photos compare the pixel size (width and height of the photos in question), then the file size for the amount of compression, then the adjustments applied, the metadata you added and keep the version with the best resolution.įor very similar photos taken in quick succession, keep the one that is technically the best one (exposure, sharpness) and themes pleasing composition. There we can see all potential duplicates and similar items in one place.īut do not delete them summarily without checking which of two similar photos is the best version to keep. This can be done by adding all Days items to a new album "Potential Duplicates" and then creating a smart album with the rule "Album > is not > Potential Duplicates". So we just need a way to collect all photos that are omitted in the Days. This is described in the second part of this user tip: About the Duplicate Detection in Photos 5… - Apple Community Without a third party application you could use the "Days" view in Photos as a starting point to search for duplicates. PhotoSweeper is the lowest cost and can recognise duplicates based on content, but PowerPhotos provides a lot of functionality in addition to the duplicate detection. I personally use PowerPhotos (I also use this for copying images and data between libraries) Īnother suitable app recommended by experts here is PhotoSweeper (I have no personal experience of this one)īoth are paid apps. They will damage your photos library and likely cause loss of your photos. I'd like to merge them all into one gigantic library, find and eliminate the duplicates, then divide them up by category into individual libraries. Use an app designed to work with the photos library (Ie one that marks the photos or puts them in an album, and lets you review and then delete them, rather than doing the delete itself.ĭo NOT use a general file duplicate finder not designed to work with the photos library. In other words, I have tons of duplicates across. You can drag each duplicate to an album if you like, so that you can review and delete in one step, but you are still going to need to find them and drag them one at a time. Then manually, by finding and deleting them yourself.
